Nearing the finish line

August 1, 2008

Dad’s doctor and nurse came today. They evaluated his situation and gave us their assessment. It’s impossible to precisely predict in these situations, but they feel that death is imminent, possibly within 24-72 hours. Could be longer, but they feel that’s unlikely.

Daddy is pretty much non-responsive. He sleeps constantly, and we can’t get him to react to our voices or even to touch like he did just a couple days ago when we brought him home. It’s been such a rapid decline…but like I said yesterday, we feel that that’s a blessing.  Mom wanted me to thank you for your prayers for his peace and for God’s will to be done. She’s convinced that it’s an answer to prayer that he hasn’t had to suffer for a long time. He’s resting peacefully, he’s not in pain, and he will soon be with the Lord.

Please continue to pray. We’re asking specifically that you would pray that God would allow him to continue to be comfortable and at peace, and that God would continue to give us the grace and strength we need for this journey.

Thank you so much for your love and concern, and especially for your prayers.

    Charity,

    You and your family have been on my mind alot. I’ve been praying for you all throughout the day. I wish I could be there, but know you are surrounded with family. Let Christ be your strength right now.

    Love,

    Charity, Mrs. Rice, and family;

    We are praying for you at this time of transition. It has to be so hard to see Dr Rice go through this, but the power of the Comforter has carried you and will carry you through this as only He can do. As for Jewel and I, we will never forget what he did for us when we moved to Anderson in 1983 and became part of Oakwood. He was so encouraging to us and made us always feel like family. I will always cherish the memories and the spiritual truths that he taught Jewel and I. We are forever indebted and thank God for each of you.

    Charity,

    We just want to let you and your famiy know that we are praying for all of you at this time! I’m sure it must be hard to see him slip away, but sweet to know that he will soon meet Jesus face to face and know exactly who He is! Rest assured that this is not the end! You will see him again and he will know exactly who all of you are!

    Let me say thank you to you & your family for sharing of your time with him through the years so that he could be an encouragement to others! I believe that Dave is in the ministry today because of how the Lord began to deal with his heart while under the ministry of Dr. Rice many years ago at Oakwood. Your family will have a reward in heaven for being willing to share in your dad’s ministry in this way!

    Please let your mom and the rest of your family know that we are covering you all in prayer! We pray that the Lord gives you the grace for this season!

    In our hearts and in our prayers,

    Dave, Jewel, Amber & Krista Shinault
